Can Corn Snakes Eat Raw Chicken?

|

Corn snakes are one of the most popular pets in the United States and for good reason. They’re relatively easy to care for gentle and make great first pets for kids. But one of the questions we get most often about corn snakes is “Can they eat raw chicken?”

Yes. Corn snakes can technically eat raw chicken but it’s not the best food for them. In the wild corn snakes eat mostly rodents so their diet is relatively high in protein. Raw chicken is also high in protein but it’s not as easily digested as rodents.

That’s not to say that you should never feed your corn snake raw chicken. If you’re in a pinch and need to feed your snake raw chicken is better than nothing. But if you’re feeding your snake on a regular basis we recommend feeding them a diet of live or frozen/thawed rodents.

There are a few reasons for this. First as we mentioned raw chicken is not as easily digested as rodents. This can lead to digestive issues for your corn snake. Second raw chicken can be a choking hazard for corn snakes. Their teeth are not designed to tear through meat so they can have difficulty eating large pieces of raw chicken.

And finally raw chicken may contain bacteria that can make your corn snake sick. So while raw chicken is technically safe for corn snakes to eat we don’t recommend feeding it to them on a regular basis.

If you do decide to feed your corn snake raw chicken there are a few things you should keep in mind. First make sure you remove all the bones from the chicken. Bones can be a choking hazard for corn snakes and they’re not easily digested.

Second cut the chicken into small pieces. This will help your corn snake digest the chicken more easily and it will also reduce the risk of choking.

And finally make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw chicken. This will help reduce the risk of bacteria contamination.

So can corn snakes eat raw chicken?

The answer is yes but we don’t recommend it. If you do decide to feed your corn snake raw chicken make sure you remove all the bones cut it into small pieces and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
