Can Guinea Pigs Eat Human Hair?

As much as we love our guinea pigs there are some things they simply shouldn’t eat – and human hair is definitely one of them! Despite their seemingly insatiable appetite guinea pigs can actually be quite choosy eaters and their delicate stomachs can’t always handle everything we might think is safe for them to consume.

So can guinea pigs eat human hair?

The answer is a resounding no! While guinea pigs will happily munch on just about anything human hair is definitely one thing they should avoid.

Not only can it be hard to digest but it can also cause all sorts of tummy troubles including bloating gas and diarrhea.

So why do guinea pigs like to eat human hair in the first place? It’s thought that they’re attracted to the protein in hair which is essential for their diet.

However there are plenty of other more suitable sources of protein for guinea pigs so there’s really no need for them to snack on our locks!

If you suspect your guinea pig has eaten human hair it’s important to keep an eye on them and look out for any signs of distress.

If they seem to be in pain or suffering from diarrhea it’s best to take them to the vet as soon as possible.

Generally speaking guinea pigs are pretty good at knowing what they can and can’t eat but it’s always best to err on the side of caution.

So if you’re ever in doubt just remember – human hair is a definite no-no!
