It’s a question that has been asked time and time again and one that continues to perplex people.

After all snakes are slithering scaly creatures that often strike fear into the hearts of those who encounter them.

And while some snakes are certainly capable of killing and eating humans the majority of snakes pose no threat to us whatsoever.

So can snakes eat humans? Let’s take a closer look.

Some Snakes Can Eat Humans But Most Do Not

There are a few instances on record of snakes eating humans.

However these are typically cases of large snakes that have attacked and eaten people who were already dead or dying.

For example in 2012 a 23-foot-long python in Indonesia was found with the remains of a 25-year-old man in its stomach.

In general snakes do not typically go after humans as prey.

We are simply not a part of their natural diet.

snakes usually eat small mammals birds reptiles amphibians and fish.

And while some snakes are capable of killing and eating large prey items such as deer they typically only do so if they are very hungry or desperate.

Why Do Some Snakes Eat Humans?

There are a few reasons why a snake might eat a human.

The first is that the snake is simply mistaken.

This can happen if a snake mistakes a human for its natural prey.

This is more likely to happen if the human is small such as a child.

The second reason is that the snake is hungry.

Snakes typically only eat once every one to two weeks so if a snake hasn’t had a meal in a while it might be desperate enough to try to eat a human.

The third reason is that the snake is defending itself.

If a snake feels threatened it might strike out in self-defense.

This is more likely to happen if the human is trying to harm the snake or if the snake is feeling threatened by the presence of humans.

What Happens If A Snake Eats A Human?

If a snake does eat a human it is not a pleasant experience for either party.

The human will likely die from suffocation or from being crushed by the snake’s coils.

The process of being eaten alive by a snake is slow and painful and it can take hours for the victim to die.

As for the snake it is not designed to eat something as large as a human.

As a result the snake can die from trying to eat a human.

In some cases the snake’s stomach might rupture from the strain of trying to digest a human.

In other cases the snake might die from asphyxiation since humans are much larger than the snakes’ natural prey items.

So can snakes eat humans? Yes some snakes can and do eat humans.

However it is not a common occurrence and most snakes pose no threat to us whatsoever.
