Do Snakes Have Backbones?

If you’ve ever seen a snake you know that they’re long and slender creatures. But have you ever wondered if they have backbones?

It turns out that snakes do have backbones. In fact they have more bones than humans! Humans have 206 bones while snakes have between 200 and 400 bones depending on the species.

So Why Are Snakes So Flexible Then?

The answer lies in the way their bones are connected. Unlike humans who have bones that are connected by joints snakes have bones that are connected by muscles. This allows them to move in a very flexible and unique way.

Some people may think that because snakes are so flexible they must not have a skeleton at all. But this is not true! Snakes definitely have a skeleton it’s just that their bones are arranged differently than ours.

One of the most interesting things about snakes is the way they move. They don’t have legs so they can’t walk as we do. Instead they use their muscles to move in a wave-like motion. This is how they are able to slither so quickly and easily.

Have You Ever Wondered How Snakes Eat?

Again the answer lies in their flexibility. Because they are so flexible they are able to open their mouths wide enough to swallow prey that is much larger than their heads!

Now that you know a little bit more about snakes you might be wondering what they eat.

While some snakes are carnivores and eat other animals others are herbivores and only eat plants. And there are even some snakes that are omnivores and eat both plants and animals.

One of the most common misconceptions about snakes is that they are all dangerous.

While it’s true that some snakes are venomous and can be dangerous to humans not all snakes are. In fact there are many different species of snakes and only a small percentage of them are actually dangerous to humans.

So the next time you see a snake don’t be afraid! Just remember that they’re not all dangerous and they actually have a lot of interesting features that make them unique creatures.
