How Often Do Guinea Pigs Come In Heat?

|

Guinea pigs are generally induced ovulators meaning that they only ovulate when they mate.

This is different from humans and other animals who ovulate on a regular cycle whether or not they mate.

For guinea pigs this means that they will only have a litter if they are mated.

How often a guinea pig comes into heat depends on a few factors including her age and whether she has had a litter before.

Young guinea pigs (under 6 months old)and girls who have never had a litter usually come into heat every 3-4 weeks.

Once a guinea pig has had a litter she will usually come into heat every 4-6weeks.

If you have a guinea pig who is not in a regular cycle it is best to consult with a veterinarian to make sure there is no underlying medical condition causing the disruption.
