Why Do Guinea Pigs Eat Their Poop?

|

Guinea pigs are interesting creatures – they are social animals that enjoy the company of other guinea pigs and they are also clean animals that groom themselves regularly.

However one unusual thing about guinea pigs is that they sometimes eat their own poop.

While this may seem gross to us there is actually a perfectly good reason why guinea pigs do this.

When a guinea pig eats its own poop it is actually consuming important nutrients that it may have missed the first time around.

This is because guinea pigs have a very short digestive tract so they can’t absorb all the nutrients from their food the first time it goes through.

By eating their own poop guinea pigs are able to get a second chance at getting those important nutrients.

There is also another reason why guinea pigs eat their poop – it’s a way of communication.

When a guinea pig eats the poop of another guinea pig it is actually getting information about that guinea pig.

This is because guinea pigs can smell hormones in other guinea pigs’ poop which can tell them things like how healthy the other guinea pig is what its gender is and even what its mood is.

So by eating the poop of another guinea pig a guinea pig can actually gather a lot of important information.

While it may seem gross to us there is actually a perfectly good reason why guinea pigs eat their own poop.
